In keeping with the goals of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, The Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) seeks to educate the public, including patients and their families, about the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular, lung, and blood diseases. To help achieve this goal, we are building a public information clearinghouse where our online visitors can find educational resources on the latest research, effective treatments, and prevention strategies related to a wide range of heart, blood vessel, lung, and blood conditions. The PHLBI Patient Clearinghouse will be a one-stop online resource where health consumers can learn about options and opportunities for treating various heart, lung, and blood disorders as well as lifestyle changes to stay healthy.
We are currently creating multiple interlocking databases that will house our files on disease overviews, therapeutic breakthroughs, clinical trials open to patients, doctor referrals to surgeons and other specialists throughout the U.S., and social support networks. Patients who want more in-depth information can also search our electronic clearinghouse for up-to-date clinical practice guidelines for specific conditions.
The PHLBI Patient Clearinghouse will showcase guest editorials of patients relaying their own stories of confronting life-threatening illnesses. World renowned doctors in cardiovascular medicine, pulmonary diseases, and blood disorders will answer some of the most frequently asked questions that health consumers have about heart, vascular, lung, and blood diseases.
Patients in Los Angeles requiring cardiothoracic surgery can undergo treatment with a medical team at one of our associate healthcare organizations of excellence such as UCLA Medical Center and the VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System. We also collaborate with expert surgeons, radiation therapists, and other physician specialists who treat heart, lung, or blood diseases in other geographical areas of the United States.
PHLBI is home to the Pacific Meso Center (PMC), one of the nation’s leading, free-standing research centers focusing on malignant pleural mesothelioma (MPM). PHLBI and PMC are part of a network of collaborating medical researchers and doctors knowledgeable not only about MPM, but also other cancers of the lungs and blood. Our online clearinghouse will give patients with MPM access to diagnostic methods and promising interventions such as lung sparing mesothelioma surgery. Patients living with MPM or other heart, lung, or blood diseases as well as their families will be able to visit our online support services resources for referrals to ancillary care providers.
