Physicians Attending International Symposium Unanimously Conclude that Patients with Malignant Mesothelioma No Longer Should be subjected to Radical Lung-Removing Surgery (EPP)
On Saturday, May 21st, The Pacific Meso Center (PMC) at Pacific Heart, Lung & Blood Institute (PHLBI) held its first International Symposium in conjunction with UCLA at the Sheraton Delfina, Santa Monica. We invited a distinguished group of speakers, including two prominent surgeons from the United Kingdom, Mr. Tom Treasure, MD and Mr. David Waller, MD.

Our group of international mesothelioma experts reviewed information from a variety of U.S. centers as well as from the recently concluded Mesothelioma And Radical Surgery (MARS) trial in the UK. English surgeons, Mr. Tom Treasure and Mr. David Waller clearly demonstrated that radical removal of the lung, extrapleural pneunonectomy or EPP holds no advantage over alternative less radical, lung-sparing therapies currently offered in other centers. LOS ANGELES, Jan. 14, 2011 -- The Pacific Meso Center (PCM) at PHLBI is pleased to announce that Clare Cameron has joined the Meso Center as its new executive director as of January 3, 2011. Ms. Cameron comes to the Center following 11 years as senior campaign director for The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, where she started numerous fundraising events which raised millions of dollars for children's blood cancer research.

She strongly believes in his innovative surgical techniques, helping those afflicted with mesothelioma. It is her goal to raise awareness and funding to help find better treatments and early detection, which will eventually lead to a cure for this dreaded disease. Read more...
Dr. Robert Cameron on Treating Mesothelioma
Over the last 16 years, Dr. Cameron has modified, improved, and performed the intricate operation hundreds of times and with more painstaking tedious precision than practically any other surgeon. Why did Dr. Cameron feel so strongly that this was the "right" procedure?
"There are a number of compelling reasons," Dr. Cameron states, "and there are a number of misconceptions or myths that confuse surgeons and patients alike." Dr. Cameron addresses some of these myths below and in the coming weeks in his column so that patients (and surgeons) have the foundation to rationally evaluate their surgical options.
Myth #4: Talc Pleurodesis Prevents Surgeons from Performing a Pleurectomy Operation. February 15, 2011.
Myth #3: Mesothelioma Tumor in the Lung "Fissures" Cannot Be Removed Without Also Removing the Entire Lung. January 28, 2011.
Myth #2: A More Radical Operation That Takes Out the Pericardium and Diaphragm for Bigger Margins is a Better Operation. January 11, 2011.
Myth #1: A More Radical Operation Obviously Provides Better Results Than a Less Radical Surgical Procedure. January 3, 2011.
